Obsessive Compulsive

Let me tell you about my 2 y/o daughter. Sometimes Erica just seems so O.C.

[Bear with me; I'll get to the ? soon]

She likes things a certain way, and it must be the same way... or else...

Example: all of the crayons must be point up in the box, and if one gets put in the wrong way, she dumps them all out and starts over.

I almost had another World War in my house, trying to get her to take a nap. She always must put her baby's pillow down, put the baby on the pillow, cover the baby with a blanket, and put the baby's cup next to her. THEN, Erica follows the same steps herself.

The problem this afternoon was that I had put Baby's blanket and pillow in the wash, and it wasn't dry by nap-time. After crying and whining, I pulled it out of the washer, still wet.

Now, to the question...
You probably don't have O.C.D. But, everyone has one or more things that they do a certain way; only that one way will do. What do you do that has become almost ritualistic?

I have complete issues with how my dishwasher is loaded. I am such a nut about it, friends wont even attempt to put a glass in it. They will do it wrong. Trust me, it will be wrong!

I'm really compulsive with checking my email. First thing I do when I wake up is check it, when I come home from somewhere, as soon as I put my stuff down I'll check it...and throughout the day when I'm home I'll go and see if there's any new messages.

~toni~ I have that tendancy , too, w/ the dishwasher!

~silverneurotic~ That reminded me I have to check my email! I haven't in 2 days!

My girl students are OC about which toilet they use. We take whole class trips to the potty. I'll send in 4 girls. After 5 minutes, not one has come in, so I'll poke my head in to tell them to hurry. There are 5 potties, and they're all waiting for the same one! Aaaaa!

I have to have the first cup of coffee that comes out of a fresh pot! This could cause an ugly scene at Starbuck's!! I have to have the first bit of an apple too! Reminds me of Ramona in those books by Beverly Cleary!!!

your answers are all great. it really is funny how people have different things that they obsess over.

I am addicted to chapstick and hand lotion. Before bed, i MUST put on my chapstick, and then hand lotion. At other times through out the day, I also need need need it. It near-bout drives me nuts when I don't.

Check for my car keys before I leave my car.....even when I know i have just put them in my bag...I will check...I think that has something to do with the 2 times I have locked myself out of my car...and I never want that to happen again....

Oh gosh, there's too many things for me to list so I won't say any or everyone will think I'm a complete nut :D

This is a good question...For me it is my DVDs. They have to be in the cabinet in an exact order. if someone takes one out, and doesn't put it back in the exact spost where they took it from, this will make me crazy.

My silverware in the dishwasher must be loaded just the right way...teaspoons together, tbls spoons together, etc. I used to be O.C about how the bath towels were folded, but now, as long as I don't have to do them myself, I don't care.

I've got tons of them myself, including the fact that my closet is color-coded and my shoes are all in labeled boxes. I cannot sit down to watch a movie unless everything is perfectly tidy in the family room, it drives me nuts and I can't relax.

BTW, my middle daughter had the same type of temperament you describe, right down to bedroom rituals, etc. We had to give the babysitters "training sessions" on the exact way to tell the bedtime stories, etc or she wouldn't go to bed. She's still that way as a teenager, the issues are just different.

You might already know this, but we learned early on that this is a sign of Giftedness. Sure enough, my daughter as well as her 2 sisters are both Gifted. :-)

i cannot stand fingerprints on glass surfaces. i find myself leaning over to the side to see if there's any fingerprints and then i'm wiping, wiping, wiping. probably a million times a day since i have a 2 year old who LOVEs to kiss himself in the mirror all day!
