Dada, dada, dada, dada Batman!

Picture this:

A wonderful, warm Spring day. The kind of weather where you know it's perfect to keep your windows open as you shop... so when you come back out, your car has that fresh, crisp smell to it, especially after being shut up over the long winter.

Now, when you left your car, it was still daylight. By now, however, the sun has set and it is dark outside. An added bonus, you think... your car should have that nice, cool feel to it. You excitedly walk to your car, anticipating the new feel to your car.

As you near the driver's door, you notice something small at the top of your open window. What in the world? It's dark, circle-ish shaped. It looks almost hairy. What? You inch closer, leaning in to look- but not too close out of fear of the unknown. Is that a ... a... BAT!

Holy crap! There's a bat on your window! All you can think is: "Rabies! Vampires! I'm going to die!" ... So, what do you do?

1) Run away, screaming! You don't care if you look like a lunatic... It's a bat, for God's sake! You're not ready to die... or become a vampire!

2) Call animal control to capture the beast. You're not taking any risks... Rabbies is a serious thing!

3) Just stand by and wait for it to fly away. Patience is a virtue... or so you've heard.

4) Call a friend/family member to pick you up. Return for the car in the morning. With any luck, it will fly to it's home, and not under your seat in waiting.

5) Start swinging at the thing. Hopefully it'll fly away, and not in. Who does it think it is, attaching itself to your car! You're going to show him who's boss!

... By the way, this isn't just a hypothetical question. This actually happened to me in real life. Scared the crap out of me! I'll share in the comments what I did, after a few of you have answered.

I can't blame you. When we were kids we would get dive bombed while in the swimming pool at night. It would freak us out since we couldn't see them very well. It made for fun pool parties though ;-)

~michael c~ Dive bombed by bats? I may have made the water a little yellowish had I been there. Eek!

~nevins~ I'm glad I stumbled upon your blog. It's cool. I'd love a banner. I'll stop by your page to learn more about it.

Now, I'm going to tell yall what I did. It was a variation of 5. I climbed in the passenger's side, slowly turned the car on to battery powered (had I turned it on for real, the car would have shook). Then I slowly closed the window from the passenger's side window control panel. LUCKILY the bat flew AWAY. I have no clue what I would have done if he flew in!

The moral of the story: NEVER leave my windows open again!

I am extremely afraid of bats. Well, anything with two sharp teeth up front.

honestly, I'd do #4. I'd have my boy get me.

I would probably call the "bat lady," an old co-worker who has bats of her own and does research with them (I used to work at a park).

...if that didn't work I'd do # 3.

~thethinker~ Glad to see you back to my site! Yeah, anything w/ sharp, pointy front teeth I would tend to stay away from!

~Jennifer~ Good choice. Let your boy feel like a hero!

~erika~ Welcome! ... Bat Lady, huh? That is def. a good choice!

first, I'd call my eldest daughter who was a member of the Bat Preservation Society or something like that when she was a kid.

then, I'd do just what you did, Abigail. start the car slowly and let him fly away unharmed. Bats are really harmless to us and good for the environment..just remind me of that if one ever lands on my car, ok?
